‘Co-ops in Action’ Makes Upgrades in the Walsworth Community Center
Chariton Valley (CV) and Macon Electric Cooperative (MEC) share a great partnership with their “cooperative” program, ‘Co-ops in Action’. Co-ops in Action was a project started in 2017 by the two cooperatives, with the intention of working together to improve the lives of the people that they serve. This program includes quarterly work projects where both MEC and CV employees come together to help a community group that is in need of assistance on a project.
The Co-ops in Action 2019 fourth quarter project included assisting the Walsworth Community Center in Marceline with upgrades to the drop-ceiling in their meeting room. The old ceiling was sagging and becoming structurally unstable, so the community center decided it was time to upgrade to smaller tiles that would be safer and more eye appealing.
Upon receiving an application for this project, the Co-ops in Action team knew it would make a great winter project for the groups and worked closely with the community center volunteers to determine the work that needed to be done and set up a volunteer work-day. That work-day was held on Tuesday, November 12, where 12 volunteers from both cooperatives came together to assist in making the upgrades.
“At MEC, we strive to find ways to help make our communities a better place; and we know our friends at Chariton Valley share this same mission,” stated Allie Bennett, Marketing and Communications Manager. “We are always excited to take on new Co-ops in Action projects so that we can stay involved in our communities and show our members that we care.”
MEC and CV select projects through a request process where community groups can apply to have work completed for their organization. A committee reviews the applications quarterly and selects projects to complete based on feasibility and impact on the community. During the volunteer work-day, the organization provides the material needed for the project and the cooperatives provide the labor. Co-ops in Action is currently seeking requests for 2020 projects.
