Macon Electric Foundation Awards Grant to North Shelby School
In November of 2016, the Board of Directors of Macon Electric Cooperative adopted a program called Operation Round Up. This program allows MEC members to donate money to help local non-profit organizations that support or provide services to members of Macon Electric Cooperative. This concept reinforces the seventh cooperative principle of concern for community. As a cooperative, members can work together to give back to their communities and support each other.
The Macon Electric Foundation was formed for the purpose of working collaboratively to allocate the funds collected from the Operation Round Up program to local community events and projects. The Foundation is comprised of a nine-member, volunteer board of directors. These directors meet quarterly to review and select grant applications from local non-profit organizations.
A grant in the amount of $195 was awarded to North Shelby School to help students partake in the solar eclipse on Monday, August 21. The grant monies were utilized to purchase 350 pairs of protective eclipse glasses for the students and faculty to safely view the eclipse that day.
“The Foundation board is happy to be able to award North Shelby with the grant for their Back-to-School Eclipse Party and is excited that the students were able to safely view the solar eclipse while learning more about the science behind the phenomenon,” said Mike Nelson, Macon Electric Foundation board president.
Organizations can apply for a Macon Electric Foundation grant by submitting an application to the Macon Electric Cooperative office prior to the due date for each quarter. In addition to community grants, the Foundation also awards scholarships to local high school seniors each year. Stay tuned for more information regarding the Macon Electric Foundation senior scholarships.
MEC Members can help give back to their communities by signing up for Operation Round Up. This program encourages members to voluntarily round-up their electric bill each month to the nearest dollar, with the extra change going to the Foundation for their grants and scholarships.
