Macon Electric Foundation Awards Grant to Bevier Homecoming Association

Macon Electric Foundation Awards Grant to Bevier Homecoming Association

In November of 2016, the Board of Directors of Macon Electric Cooperative adopted a program called Operation Round Up. This program allows MEC members to donate money to help local non-profit organizations that support or provide services to members of Macon Electric Cooperative. This concept reinforces the seventh cooperative principle of concern for community. As a cooperative, members can work together to give back to their communities and support each other.

The Macon Electric Foundation was formed for the purpose of working collaboratively to allocate the Operation Round Up funds to local community events and projects. The Foundation is comprised of a nine-member, volunteer board of directors. These directors meet quarterly to review and select grant applications from local non-profit organizations.

A grant in the amount of $250 was awarded to the Bevier Homecoming Association to assist with renovation costs for new restrooms at the city park. It is the goal of the association to build neater, cleaner and larger restroom areas for the community of Bevier in the city park, which will also come in extremely handy for the ever-popular Bevier Homecoming.

“The Foundation board is honored to award the Bevier Homecoming Association with this grant to assist in the construction of new restrooms for the Bevier City Park.  The board is dedicated to making a difference in our local communities, and there is no better way of doing this than helping to honor a local veteran. These new restrooms will be constructed in honor of SO2 Navy S.E.A.L., Adam Olin Smith, a Bevier native who proudly gave his life for our country,” said Carol Burstert, Macon Electric Foundation board member.

Organizations can apply for a Macon Electric Foundation grant by submitting an application to the Macon Electric Cooperative office prior to the due date for each quarter. Third quarter applications are due on October 13, 2017. Interested organizations can visit MEC’s website for more information: www.maconelectric.com/macon-electric-foundation.

In addition to community grants, the Foundation also awards scholarships to local high school seniors each year. Stay tuned for more information regarding the Macon Electric Foundation senior scholarships.

MEC Members can help give back to their communities by signing up for Operation Round Up. This program encourages members to voluntarily round-up their electric bill each month to the nearest dollar, with the extra change going to the Foundation for their grants and scholarships. On average, a member would donate approximately fifty cents each month. Members can register online at www.maconelectric.com/operation-round-up, or contact the MEC office at (660) 385-3157.
