Macon Electric Foundation Awards Eight $1,000 Scholarships to Graduating Seniors

Macon Electric Cooperative supports continuing education through the Macon Electric Foundation scholarship program each year. Graduating high school seniors in MEC’s service area are eligible to compete for eight, $1,000 scholarships. Applications are available in January and are awarded in May of each year. This newly established program awards scholarships to seniors who are planning to attend a four-year college, a junior college, a technical school, or a vocational school.

The Macon Electric Foundation scholarship program is supported by the Operation Round Up program. This program is funded through the generosity of MEC members who voluntarily round up their electric bill to the nearest dollar each month. The funds collected are distributed to a variety of local non-profit organizations, as well as to the senior scholarships. The Macon Electric Foundation Board reviews and decides upon scholarship applications in May of each year. This board consists of nine volunteers spread throughout MEC’s service area.

The 2017 scholarship recipients are:

Zachary David Gray of Atlanta
Jordan Marie Teter of Atlanta
Andrew Edgar of Bucklin
Charles Thomas Eugene Izard of Brookfield
Avery Lee Foster of Macon
Ashtyn Elaine Carothers of Salisbury
John O’Laughlin of Clarence
Laura Smith of La Plata

Macon Electric Cooperative and the Macon Electric Foundation encourage all MEC members to sign up for Operation Round Up. For more information about the program, call 660-385-3157 or visit www.maconelectric.com
